Much-needed rainfall to persist across UK through the weekend

Following a stretch of relatively dry conditions, wet weather across the United Kingdom will persist into early next week.
“A series of low pressure systems will bring unsettled weather to the U.K. through the weekend and into Monday,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Courtney Spamer.
This nearly stationary source of unsettled weather spinning over the waters northwest of Scotland will keep rounds of showers, some heavy, moving into much of the U.K.
“Thundery showers are expected across Northern Ireland , Wales and the majority of England, including London, on Saturday,” said Spamer.
“Some of these thunderstorms could contain small hail due to the cooler air aloft in these thunderstorms.”

If possible, residents should seek shelter indoors ahead of any storms.
Ponding water on roadways, and in low-lying or poor drainage areas, could occur as a result of particularly heavy showers.
While travel disruptions could occur in areas hit by the most persistent downpours, many will welcome the rain following the recently dry weather.
Before Wednesday’s washout, London had only recorded 10 mm (0.4 of an inch), a mere 22 percent of their average May precipitation.
Locations, such as Dublin, largely spared by the midweek rain are still lingering in near-drought conditions. The Irish city has only received 18 percent of its monthly precipitation as of 18 May.

Sunny spells are expected to help dry out much of England on Sunday, but the pleasant weather could be short-lived.
“While there could some periods of drier weather on Sunday, more showery spells are expected across much of the U.K. on Monday,” said Spamer.
Despite the break across England and Wales on Sunday, showery spells will continue across Scotland through the weekend and into Monday.
A dry day will be hard to come by through Wednesday, but a period of widespread sunny weather is on the horizon late next week.
