Third Snowstorm in a Week Headed For New England (FORECAST)

New England could see its third snowstorm in about a week's time Tuesday night into Thursday, piling onto the feet of snow that have already fallen in some areas.

A southward dip in the jet stream combined with a disturbance from the Southeast will help to trigger the development of low pressure off the Northeast coast by later Wednesday.

A southward dip in the jet stream will sweep across the East, helping to induce low pressure development off the coast.

For the moment, it appears those two systems will combine too late for a major, widespread snowstorm across the Northeast, since low pressure is expected to form well offshore. But some areas in northern New England, namely Maine, will not get off the hook so easily with the potential for another foot of snow midweek.

Winter Storms Niko and Orson have already brought more than 30 inches of snow to Maine since last Thursday. Robbinston, Maine, located near the Canadian border, has seen nearly 40 inches of snow in that time.

Tuesday Night-Wednesday

• Light to moderate snow will sweep from the northern Great Lakes into upstate New York and New England.
• Heavier snow may develop in Maine late, as low pressure pivots off the coast with a trough of surface low pressure extending westward into the state.
• Parts of southern New England, including Boston, are expected to see mixed precipitation or rain, at this time. Areas west and north of Boston have the greatest likelihood of seeing snow or a wintry mix.
• Forecast: Albany, New York | Boston | Portland, Maine

Wednesday's Forecast

Wednesday Night-Thursday

• The heaviest snow may affect parts of Maine along with New Hampshire. Gusty winds will also develop.
• Western New York and western Pennsylvania into the mountains of West Virginia will also see additional light snowfall, including some lake effect.
• Forecast: Bangor, Maine | Concord, New Hampshire

Thursday's Forecast

How Much Snow?

• The best chance of 6 inches or more of snowfall will be from New York's Adirondack mountains into parts of Vermont, New Hampshire and, especially, Maine.
• Another foot or more of snow is not out of the question in Maine.
