Wintry weather to slick roads in northeastern US this weekend

November 24,2016; 8:57PM,EST

Spotty rain, sleet and snow are in store for part of the northeastern United States during the weekend, creating slippery travel conditions in some locations.
During Friday, rain will spread across Michigan, New York, the mid-Atlantic and much of southern New England. Over the northern tier, sleet and some snow will mix in over higher terrain.

"A few hit-or-miss showers in the East won't really slow down Black Friday holiday shoppers at all," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Carl Babinski.
As one storm fades, another system will bring a wintry mix from the central Appalachians to New England during Saturday.
"A new storm system is expected to form just off the mid-Atlantic coast," Babinski said.
By Saturday, many areas that had rain on Friday can expect a transition to showers that include cold rain, sleet and even some snow.

The steadiest snow can be expected over parts of the Adirondacks in northern New York, while a wintry mix is more likely throughout southern New York and the ridges of central and western Pennsylvania.
Motorists should be aware of slick spots on roads where temperatures drop below freezing during overnight and early morning hours.
"Most of the rain on Saturday will either occur in coastal New England, or out over the Atlantic," said Babinski.
Little to no wintry mix showers will extend to the south and east over the coastal mid-Atlantic on Saturday.
A dry day is forecast for much of the Interstate 95 corridor in the mid-Atlantic on Sunday.
Snow showers are expected to linger in New England and upstate New York through the weekend.
Up to 6 inches of fresh snow can be expected to fall over the peaks of northern New England, tempting skiers and snowboarders seeking an outdoor holiday weekend activity.

Many ski areas open for the first time on Friday, and the snow will help with opening day conditions.
Just a friendly reminder that you'll be able to do this tomorrow. See you at 8:30am for Opening Day.

"We're absolutely thrilled, and of course thankful, to be able to offer what amounts to be an exceptional top-to-bottom skiing experience on opening day," said Brian Heon, General Manager of Wildcat Mountain in New Hampshire.
While some resorts have pushed opening dates back into early December due to low snow cover, those who are opening will get some help from Mother Nature this weekend.
Dry weather is anticipated for Monday before another wet system moves into the area.
