Severe thunderstorms rumbled through the Northeast on Monday, lashing the region with damaging winds while also unleashing heavy downpours that triggered flash flooding.
"Thunderstorms raced across Pennsylvania and Maryland before moving into New Jersey, Delaware and southern New York," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Edwards said. "Widespread reports of wind damage occurred with the storms along with flash flooding," he added.
Monday marked the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. While the main event was taking place indoors at the Wells Fargo Center, media tents and other activities were set up outside the venue, forcing many to scramble for shelter.
Public officials urged people to clear out of nearby Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park and seek shelter under the Interstate 95 underpass.
Flash flooding left numerous travelers stranded during their evening commutes, especially in portions of New Jersey and New York, Edwards said.
Frankford and Pennypack Creeks, located around the Philadelphia area, rapidly rose above flood stage before receding, officials said.
Flight delays were in effect at Philadelphia International Airport; John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York City; Boston's Lawrence Logan International Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Airport.
