WeatherWhys for June 29,2016 from accuweather.com

There is a close correlation between sea-surface temperatures and the frequency of hurricanes. The reason is that warmth stored in the ocean is the main source of energy for this type of storm. Oceans are generally warmest in late August and early September. As the ocean water temperature starts its decline in late September, so does the frequency of hurricanes.
