Threat of Thundersnow Continues With Winter Storm Jonas

Scattered thunderstorms, including the threat of thundersnow, will continue across parts of the Mid-Atlantic region and possibly coastal New England through Saturday night from Winter Storm Jonas.

  • A few thunderstorms are possible across southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the Delmarva peninsula, Long Island and coastal southern New England.
  • Thundersnow with snowfall rates reaching 2 to 3 inches per hour at times will be possible in any stronger convective bands that develop.
  • Strong wind gusts are likely near the coast from the Virginia tidewater to the Delmarva peninsula, eastern and southern New Jersey, Long Island, as well as Cape Cod and the Islands.
  • Cities: Atlantic City | Montauk, New York | Ocean City, Maryland

Thursday's Storm Reports

An EF2 tornado hit the area near Sumrall in Lamar County, Mississippi, according to a preliminary assessment by the National Weather Service. In Copiah County, Mississippi, a preliminary EF0 rating was given to a tornado that impacted the Crystal Springs area.
Local authorities reported downed power lines and sheds destroyed by thunderstorm winds in Ball, Louisiana, Thursday afternoon. A possible tornado was reported near Wesson, Mississippi early Thursday evening, where a barn, house and other structures were damaged. A tornado may have also hit the area near Improve, Mississippi, where emergency officials reported multiple trees and power lines down. None of these tornado reports had been confirmed by the National Weather Service as of Thursday night.
Early Thursday morning, hail up to golfball size was reported in Garrison, Texas, and Leesville, Louisiana. In the afternoon, 2-inch diameter hail was reported near De Ridder, Louisiana. During Thursday evening, baseball size hail was reported near Wilmer, Louisiana.
