Two shark attacks were reported Friday, June 26, off the coasts of North Carolina and South Carolina.
At about 11:41 a.m., a 47-year-old man was injured swimming one mile north of the Avon Fishing Pier in Avon, North Carolina, according to the National Park Service at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Paramedics from Hatteras Island Rescue Squad and NPS rangers were called to the scene to attend to the victim, who suffered "various injuries to his right leg and lower back," the NPS said. The victim, who was transported to Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, for further treatment, had been swimming with several others but no other swimmers were injured.
The last shark attack at the Seashore was in 2011 at Ocracoke Island, the NPS said.
Roughly 40 minutes earlier, a man was bitten around 11 a.m., while swimming off of Hunting Island, South Carolina, the Charlotte Observer reported. Local officials told swimmers to stay out of the water, according to the Observer.
On Saturday, June 27, the NPS in Cape Hatteras said that a 17-year-old male had suffered injures from a shark while swimming near the town of Waves. In total, six shark attacks have been reported in North Carolina this month.
