After a period of warm temperatures across central and eastern Europe, thunderstorms will develop as cooler air moves into the region.
A cold front pressing east will spark thunderstorms capable of locally damaging wind and hail through Tuesday afternoon from Poland into the the Baltic States.
While damaging wind and hail will not be widespread, the strongest of thunderstorms could bring gusts of wind to 80-95 kph (50-60 mph). Wind this strong can cause power outages and some structural damage. These strong storms can also bring hail up to 2 cm (about an inch) in diameter.
Flooding will be very localized; however, 25 mm (an inch) of rain within a short time can lead to ponding on roadways and difficult travel.
Farther south, heavy rain and thunderstorms erupted from southern France northward into parts of Germany on Monday. Thunderstorms produced a tornado in southern France, while hail was reported in eastern Germany.
As low pressure pulled moisture northward from the Mediterranean Sea, heavy downpours soaked southern France with an average of 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) of rain on Monday. The heaviest rain fell across parts of the Massif Central where up to 150 mm (6 inches) of rain was reported.
Rain and thunderstorms will move across northern Italy Monday night before spreading over much of the Balkan Peninsula on Tuesday.

These downpours can quickly bring 25-50 mm (1-2 inches) of rain leading to localized flash flooding.
Cities that will get showers and thunderstorms on Tuesday will include Budapest, Belgrade, Zagreb and Sarajevo.

This storm system will move into eastern Europe on Wednesday bringing areas of rain. However, with less moisture and more stable conditions, the threat for strong thunderstorms and flooding will come to an end.
