The tectonic plates on which we live are always moving, and when the Earth fractures under us, it can unleash a massive, violent earthquake that can bring entire cities to their knees.
In the slideshow above, we've listed all 8 earthquakes of a magnitude 8.7 or higher since 1900. Most of these quakes were so devastating that they caused widespread death and destruction, and several triggered massive tsunamis that spread the damage across entire oceans.
