Weather Underground Forecast for Wednesday,December 24,2014

A strong low pressure system will impact the eastern third of the country on Wednesday, while a separate system will affect the West Coast.

A powerful low pressure system will lift north northeastward over the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes. This system will usher moderate to heavy snow showers across the middle Mississippi Valley and the upper Midwest, especially over northern Illinois, northwest Indiana, eastern Wisconsin and western Michigan. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will extend southward from the eastern Great Lakes to the eastern Gulf Coast. As this system shifts eastward, it will collide with relatively warm, muggy air from the Gulf of Mexico. Strong thunderstorms and heavy rain will result over the Southeast and the southern Mid-Atlantic. Showers and thunderstorms will also be possible across the Tennessee Valley, the northern MId-Atlantic and the Ohio Valley. Light to moderate showers will spread across across New England, while a mixture of rain and snow will be possible over northern New England.

Meanwhile, a separate cold front will push southeastward over the western half of the country. During the first half of Wednesday, heavy rain and mountain snow will develop across the Pacific Northwest, the upper Intermountain West and northern California. Light to moderate precipitation will spread across central California, the Great Basin and the northern high Plains during the afternoon and evening. A ridge of high pressure will keep conditions relatively clear from the Southwest to the southern Plains.
