Following the rounds of tropical downpours across the Philippines, danger now aims for Vietnam and Cambodia for the weekend.
After developing into a depression east of the Philippines and crossing over the Islands with locally heavy rain, Tropical Storm Sinlaku recently strengthened over the open waters of the South China Sea. Landfall is expected in Vietnam this weekend with the worst conditions Saturday night into Sunday.

The storm is expected to reach Vietnam in the vicinity of Quy Nhon and Nha Trang. The small size of the storm will likely keep the gustiest winds near the coast. However, flooding downpours will continue as the system moves inland.
Due to interaction with land, Sinlaku will weaken rapidly to a tropical rainstorm as it moves over central Vietnam and into eastern Cambodia and southern Laos by Sunday afternoon.

Flooding rain and mudslides will be the greatest threat across the region as rain totals of 50-100 mm (2-4 inches) will be common. Isolated amounts over 150 mm (6 inches) are possible from central Vietnam into eastern Cambodia and far southern Laos.
A tropical wave currently bringing numerous showers and thunderstorms to the Philippines will move into the south China Sea this weekend and could strengthen into a weak tropical cyclone before reaching southern Vietnam midweek.
Although it may never strengthen into an organized tropical cyclone, it will bring renewed heavy rains to areas that are hit by Sinlaku, resulting in an elevated threat for flooding and mudslides.
Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski and Meteorologist Courtney Spamer contributed to this story.
