Phanfone to Target Japan Late Week

While Kammuri curved east of Japan over the weekend, another threat looms later this week as Tropical Storm Phanfone approaches the region.
Phanfone, currently east of Guam will track northwest through the northern Mariana Islands Tuesday into Wednesday. While some gusty showers and thunderstorms are possible in Guam, the worst of this storm will remain to the north.
While continuing on a northwest track through at least Friday, Phanfone will move through an area of relatively low shear and warm ocean temperatures which will allow the cyclone to strengthen into a typhoon.

A trough moving from China into Japan late this week will then attempt to steer the powerful cyclone northward. This track will take Phanfone toward Japan over the weekend or early next week.

By this time, Phanfone could be an extremely dangerous typhoon with winds equal to or greater than a Category 3 hurricane.
Depending on how quickly Phanfone tracks to the north and northeast, it could pass just east of Japan, or make landfall as a typhoon capable of producing life-threatening conditions.

Areas from the Ryukyu Islands north through the remainder of Japan should monitor this cyclone closely in the coming days to be best prepared for a potential landfalling typhoon.
